Whole-bodied healing that includes talk therapy, play therapy, trauma-informed (EMDR & Somatics), and nature-based approaches

The teen years have always been a hurdle, but teens these days are growing up in often unimaginable times. Teens deserve support navigating these important years of their lives.

Your teen is struggling and you have done the late-night Google searches, the teacher phone calls, the pediatrician appointments, and you are feeling scared, stressed, and maybe at your wits end. You are not alone and it is not your fault. The fact that your teen needs help is not a failure on your part as the parent, I promise you this. It is, however, our responsibility as adults to reach out for more help when our children are needing further assistance.
**If you ARE the teen that is looking for support—> know that you are courageous for seeking help & you deserve support.**
What teen therapy can help with:
Emotional wellbeing (reducing stress, anxiety, fear, anger, irritability, depression)
Self-esteem
Disordered eating and developing a positive body image
Peer relationships
Processing family conflict and transitions such as divorce, grief, separation
Processing trauma
Academic & school performance (including accessing appropriate accommodations & supports for teens in the school environment)
Identity exploration and affirmation (including gender, sexual orientation, race, ethnicity, neurodivergence)
Replacing self-harming behaviors with healthy coping skills & joyful habits
Making choices about the future
How does teen therapy work and how are parents/caregivers involved?
Teen therapy utilizes a mixture of talk therapy & therapeutic tools along with healing approaches that are specific to the teen’s interests to process distressing emotions, promote positive self-esteem, and practice new ways of being in the world. For example, some teens find a lot of peace in nature, so we might go for a hike together for a session. Other teens might love music, art, or gaming. (YES, even video games can be a part of healing!) I incorporate a teen’s interests into therapy, because this is where healing happens.
Parents and caregivers are instrumental in supporting their teen in practicing the skills from therapy and deepening emotional connections within the parent/caregiver-child bond. I will work closely with each teen’s family unit to provide psycho-education, coaching, and collaboratively create a plan for wellbeing for the teen and the family as a whole. We may have sessions that include both parents/caregivers & teens to facilitate understanding & communication. I also collaborate closely with a teen’s whole team including but not limited to family members, teachers, case managers, psychiatrists, and pediatricians.

FAQs
-
I prefer to offer teen therapy sessions in-person either in the family’s home or outdoors. Often, it works well to do a mixture of both!
Outdoors: I offer teen therapy sessions outdoors in neighborhood parks. Outdoor nature therapy is a wonderful way for teens to access mental health services. I provide outdoor park therapy mostly at Dimond Park in Oakland, CA or in the Redwood Regional Park. I can also provide therapy in a park local to you.
Family’s home: I offer teen therapy sessions within a family’s home if they are local to the East Bay. In-home sessions work well if there is a dedicated space for the teen and myself to be together. (the teen’s bedroom, a playroom, a backyard).
Online: Sometimes, online sessions work best for families due to a variety of reasons. If this is the case, we can arrange for Zoom sessions. I incorporate a variety of digital play therapy tools to support teens in being able to express themselves fully online.
